In early July, the Colorado State University meat judging team traveled abroad to represent the United States in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia at the 28th Annual Australian Intercollegiate Meat Judging (ICMJ) competition.
The team attended the three-day conference, learning about the Australian meat industry, and two-day contest, culminated by the ICMJ Coles Award Dinner. The team walked away with an abundance of hardware, highlighted by The Roy McDonald Shield Champion Team award. The team also received champion honors in Pork Judging, Lamb Judging, Beef Judging, Overall Placings, Overall Questions and Reasons, and runner up honors in Eating Quality Evaluation.
Team member Brett Meisinger, Pagosa Springs, CO, received The John Carter Champion Buckle for being the first high individual in the contest. Meisinger was also high individual in overall questions and reasons and second in beef judging. Michael Semler, Baymont, CO, was also a high scoring individual, being the high individual in lamb judging, beef judging, and overall placings, and second in beef pricings and overall questions and reasons. Mikaila Andersen, Mead, CO, received honors for second place in lamb judging and overall placings. Other team members included: Jazmine Brown, Brush, CO; Chloe Carlson, San Antonio, TX; Mac Cassas, Reno, NV; Savannah Millburn, Princeton, MO; Landon Verbeek, Fort Lupton, CO; Wesley Woolery, Hat Creek, CA. The team is coached by graduate student in meat science, Blake Foraker, and supervised by faculty member in the Department of Animal Sciences, Dr. Dale Woerner.
In addition to representing the United States in first class fashion at the contest, the team traveled the country touring industry operations and taking in Australian sites. Visits included Fletcher’s lamb packing facility, Dubbo Livestock Markets, McPherson lamb feedlot, JBS Riverina beef packing facility and feedlot, LambPro sheep seedstock operation, Angus Pastoral Company cattle feedlot and seedstock operation, Rockpool Restaurant, Meat and Livestock Australia headquarters, King’s Beach, and the Australia Zoo. The team would like to extend their appreciation to: the ICMJ committee and Tim Ryan for the invitation to attend the conference and contest, Peter McGilchrist and the University of New England team for their hospitality in hosting the team for the few days prior to the conference, and finally, the Angus family for housing the team, cooking extravagant meals, and allowing them to try a hand in an Australian ranch sport known as camp drafting.
The team looks forward to the remaining four contests this fall to close out the 2018 judging year.
